UK schools ‘innovate to accelerate energy transition’ - Finalists of PA's 11th Raspberry Pi competition announced

26 April 2023

PA Consulting, the company that’s bringing ingenuity to life, announces finalists for its annual Raspberry Pi competition, ahead of the final awards day taking place on Wednesday 3rd May.

Now in its eleventh year, the competition seeks to inspire and empower the next generation of ingenious people to solve the world’s biggest challenges. The 24 teams will present their inventions to a group of expert judges, from leading organisations including Coca-Cola, Nationwide, Network Rail, and Rolls-Royce on 3 May at the competition’s final which will take place in the City of London.

Entrants to the 2023 competition were tasked with how they could ‘innovate to accelerate energy transition’ and come up with an invention that could help to either reverse the effects of climate change or respond to the challenge of providing affordable energy.

Some inventions that have made it through to the final include:

  • Improving the efficiency of solar panels in both domestic and international contexts, by calculating the optimum angles that the panel should be fixed at throughout the day
  • Extending the range of electric vehicles by introducing wireless charging to transfer power to vehicles at common stopping points such as traffic lights and parking spaces
  • Reducing costs and emissions from lighting by using a device to detect the artificial light coming from household lighting and providing a dashboard to show where most energy has been wasted.
I am astounded at the level of entries this year and it’s just remarkable to think that they’ve been generated by young people. It’s great to see the effort and thought the school-and-college-age students have already put into their inventions, with some unique ideas that I really can’t wait to see brought to life on the awards day. Our annual Raspberry Pi competition is a core part of our efforts to develop and inspire people, particularly those facing disadvantage, to be the innovators and leaders of tomorrow, applying their ingenuity to solve the world's biggest challenges.”
