Teufel is one of Europe’s leading consumer electronics brands, known for its hi-fi expertise and bold design. In response to rising levels of electronic waste and shifting consumer expectations toward longer-lasting products, they explored new approaches to product development.

The result, developed in collaboration with our design experts and other partners, is MYND: a lifestyle speaker designed with durability, repairability, and mindful material selection in mind, offering users new levels of flexibility and control.

Exploring circular-inspired product development

Short innovation cycles and highly integrated systems often shape the consumer electronics market. Within the MYND project, Teufel explored how it could take certain aspects of product development further – placing greater emphasis on repairability, modular design approaches, and material efficiency.

MYND served as a concrete use case. The team aimed to challenge technical conventions and develop a product concept designed for long-term use – both from a technical perspective and in everyday life. Rather than focusing on optimising individual components, the team focused on creating a system that remains in use for as long as possible through repair, interchangeability, and continued usability.

Throughout the process, our interdisciplinary teams from product development, design, and engineering worked closely together to align functionality, manufacturability, and user experience.

Developing a circular product concept

Within the project, our joint team tested different approaches to integrate key influencing factors early in the development process. This included lifecycle assessments to identify components and materials with particularly high impact.

Based on these insights, the team developed a product architecture that facilitates repairs without compromising acoustic performance. Clear guiding principles shaped the development of MYND, and the team continuously refined them throughout the project.

The design places equal emphasis on usability and ease of maintenance: intuitive disassembly, repair-friendly construction, and access to technical information make repairs, upgrades, and continued use straightforward.

Our ambition was to take a holistic view – from initial concept and material selection to durability and, ultimately, clean separation of materials for recycling at the end of the product’s life.”

Enabling powerful sound with a focus on longevity

MYND also delivers on sound quality, staying true to Teufel’s signature: precise, powerful, and dynamic. Together, we carefully engineered an acoustic setup that combines performance with efficiency. This included a 2.1 system with waveguides, ensuring natural stereo imaging, while a long-throw midwoofer and passive radiators enable deep, powerful bass.

Efficient Class-D amplifiers and DSP technology fine-tune the sound profile, delivering a balanced listening experience even within a compact form factor. The result is a speaker that remains clear and detailed at both low and high volumes and adapts flexibly to different listening scenarios.

Launching a groundbreaking product for users and our planet

The result is MYND: a modular, repairable lifestyle speaker with an open-source architecture, built to withstand everyday use. With its IP67-rated enclosure, tactile controls, and timeless design, it combines powerful sound with long-term usability.

Users can repair or replace nearly every component using standard tools. Modular parts, a housing that incorporates 50 percent recycled materials, and reduced component complexity support longer use. The team integrated end-of-life considerations from the outset – making MYND a platform that users can maintain, adapt, and use for longer.

We wanted to create a product people will keep for years – because it’s useful, enjoyable, and adaptable.”

The MYND project demonstrates how teams can apply new approaches in product development in practice. The insights gained provide valuable inspiration for future developments and contribute to a stronger focus on repairability and longevity.

Improving relevance for users

MYND shows that teams can effectively combine durability, repairability, and user-friendly design. The speaker performs reliably in everyday use while remaining flexible and adaptable over time.

Recognitions such as the iF Design Award, the Good Design Award, the IDI Irish Design Award, and Cradle to Cradle certification further underline the project’s approach.

Through close collaboration across design, engineering, and product development, MYND demonstrates how new ideas can contribute fresh momentum to the evolution of audio products.

When we design products for longer use and adaptation over time, they create real value for users.”
