Project: Protecting the environment by monitoring air quality

Our project was inspired by the world’s rising levels of harmful air pollution and greenhouse gases. We created a device that lets people access live data about pollution levels in their area from an app. We believe this is important since people need to see the data if we’re to raise awareness of climate change and increasing pollution levels. The goal is to have multiple devices across a city.

The device is a 3D-printed box that contains the Raspberry Pi and a variety of sensors, which are entirely solar powered. Its sds011 sensor, for example, measures the quantity of fine particles in the air, PM2.5 and PM10. Children and the elderly are more likely to be affected by this pollution. Having the sensor lets people see the pollution levels and unsafe areas from their phones, so they know where to avoid when out. Furthermore, we hope that seeing this data will persuade people to switch to a more sustainable lifestyle, for example by using public transport or electric cars.

With the API key and channel ID that correspond with the city you want data from, you can download the app to see graphs and readings for the multiple sensors in the box. In the future, we plan to run a server which shows live data publicly.
