Years 4-6 finalists

PA Raspberry Pi Awards 2024

This year, we challenged students to develop ingenious solutions in response to the theme: improving health and well-being.

Out of the many innovative submissions by teams around the country, here are the finalist projects from years 4-6 students:

AirAware

Detecting unsafe gases and alerting users wherever they are

AirAware is an app that detects unsafe gases and alerts users at homes or offices using Raspberry Pi-aided gas sensors. Some gases in the air, such as Nitric oxide (NO2), Carbon Monoxide (CO), and the ones from various household chemicals (volatile organic compounds), can be very harmful to humans, potentially leading to serious health issues like asthma or other lung diseases.

Don't Worry, Be HapPi

Developing a system to support children's mental health discreetly

“Don’t Worry Be HapPi” is an innovative approach to support primary school children's mental health and well-being discreetly. It introduces a system where each child is given an RFID key-fob for identity. The children can then express their emotions by tapping the key-fob against check-in stations placed around the school, based on a range of five emotions. Each emotion is denoted as a number ranging from very sad to very happy, but this could also be tailored to accommodate other emotions (e.g. unhappy, confused, frustrated, etc). The Teachers' module features a physical dashboard which offers an instant, real-time view of the pupil’s emotions.

Reminding people to water their plants and improve their well-being

We have created a box called the G.R.O.W Box (Growth Regulation and Often Watering box). We decided to make this product because plants are scientifically proven to improve wellbeing. Our product will help people with memory loss or people who forget to water their plants. To make our product suitable for people with short term memory, we added and coded a help button which will tell people which light will turn on when an amount of moisture is detected. There is also a switch which turns the lights on and off so that they don’t affect you when you are sleeping. The button still works when the lights are off.

The Raspberry Teddies

Designing a teddy bear to help with children's mental wellbeing

Our invention will help children's mental wellbeing by offering emotional support. Our product is a teddy bear which will offer a child comfort, entertain them and even talk to them! It would be their own friend. Children would be able to use this teddy at home, at school or anywhere really. The Raspberry Pi built-in screen makes the Artie Bear an interactive product which will require input from the user and then help them depending on their answers.
