Bee populations are rapidly declining due to human activities such as farming. Global warming is also a major issue as temperature is crucial to bees’ survival – worker bees keep the queen at a consistent 24°C and don’t leave the hive if outside temperatures fall below 9°C. And if there’s no queen bee in a hive, the temperature falls fast and kills all the other bees.
Our invention monitors beehives using a DHT22 temperature and humidity sensor, which we ran from the Raspberry Pi. The data is displayed on a website we created using Flask and HTML. We used imported code from the internet to make the system easier to set up on a commercial scale.
Thanks to John the beekeeper, we were able to test our sensor for three days. But we only got three hours of data as the connection failed. We found the average humidity and temperature in the hive were within normal levels at 50-60% and 25°C, so John could know his bees were healthy.
To improve our sensor, we would make it waterproof, improve the connection with better cabling and add a solar power bank to extend battery life. We would also connect the Raspberry Pi to the internet instead of a local connection.
