Realising a bold new vision

Dole Asia Holdings is on a mission. It wants to be known for producing nutritious fruit in a sustainable way, and in a form that’s easy to enjoy. Its new purpose, defined by Pier Luigi Sigismondi, President at Dole Packaged Foods, is nothing less than ‘sunshine for all’. To realise a vision this bold, there can be no half measures. It’s about reinventing every part of a process that starts with the fruit in the fields and ends with consumers wanting to biodegrade or recycle the packaging. CHANGING FROM TOP TO BOTTOM

Global packaged fruit giant Dole Asia Holdings is transforming its business. Our diverse team of experts are working with Dole to make it happen.

“It’s a total transformation,” says Wil Schoenmakers, PA’s Global Head of Consumer Products and Manufacturing. “Take pineapples, for example. Changing how they’re harvested and processed means getting more of the best-quality fruit into production, preserving more of its nutritional value and wasting less of it. And changing packaging cuts out plastic and makes the fruit easier to eat. That chimes with what consumers want, and that matters in a really competitive market.”

TURNING IDEAS TO REALITY

All these changes are interconnected, and each needs its own set of innovative new processes and technologies. Work on developing and bringing them together is happening at Dole’s facilities in South–East Asia and at PA’s Global Innovation and Technology Centre in Cambridge, England. This is where we turn ingenious ideas into physical and digital reality. It’s where strategy, design, science, manufacturing, digital and supply chain expertise come together under one roof, to deliver commercial success.

So far, the team has developed novel production technologies to extract more value from each and every pineapple. Together, we’re developing different product formats and designing new packaging solutions to realise Dole’s ambition to eliminate plastics. Also, we’re looking to repurpose handheld inspection technology to take the guesswork out of assessing the quality of fruit before picking.

HANDLING THE WHOLE TRANSFORMATION

“Dole’s transformation encompasses everything from enhancing its employees’ livelihoods to improving sustainability for the planet and giving more consumers access to better nutrition around the world,” says Wil Schoenmakers. “Having one multidisciplinary team, and the facilities to build and test physical and digital solutions, lets us generate ingenious ideas and iterate through them fast, delivering end-to-end innovation.”

PA and Dole are just getting started. Projects on the horizon include using data analytics to pinpoint how soil quality, weather and other factors combine to produce better and more nutritious fruit. It’s the next ingenious step along the road to ‘sunshine for all’.
