Engineering elegance for everyday skincare
NuFACE, a leading women-founded innovator in at-home microcurrent skincare and red light therapy, came to us to redefine their compact FIX microcurrent device. They needed a design that could stand out against lower cost competitors, deliver better manufacturing efficiency, and seamlessly fit into their updated product family – ambitions that introduced a set of distinct design and engineering hurdles.
Our multidisciplinary team of industrial designers, mechanical and electrical engineers collaborated to create the next-generation FIX MicroWand – an FDA-cleared, smarter, more durable device that targets fine lines and wrinkles, depuffs under the eyes, and plumps lips.
The result blends precision engineering with intuitive design, aligning with NuFACE’s premium brand and the growing demand for accessible, at-home wellness solutions.
Designing for seamless precision
NuFACE asked us to reimagine their FIX device so it could stay ahead of low‑cost competitors, align with their second‑generation product family, and overcome the limitations of the original design. The challenge was to create a compact, precise, and portable microcurrent tool that was more durable, easier to manufacture, and water resistant – while elevating NuFACE’s premium brand expression and intuitive user experience.
We began by grounding the work in their ambition: to bridge skincare devices and topical products into a unified beauty regimen, and to reinforce their position as an FDA‑cleared brand in a market crowded with imitators. Leveraging our deep experience in the beauty and personal‑care category, our industrial design team explored form‑factor options that fit seamlessly into the lifestyle of NuFACE’s beauty and longevity‑focused consumer. Working closely with the founders and the broader NuFACE team, we refined and down‑selected concepts to arrive at a direction that felt both elevated and distinctly NuFACE.
Prioritising cohesion across the portfolio
As part of NuFACE’s next-generation lineup, the FIX MicroWand had to align with the Trinity+ and Mini+. Our team ensured consistency in form language, finish, and user interface, creating a unified experience across all touchpoints. Every detail – from material finish to interaction feedback – was crafted to reinforce the brand’s commitment to performance, beauty, and ease of use.
We developed a minimal user interface that communicates all operating states and error conditions through three discreet lights. This visual simplicity supports the brand’s premium positioning and ensures intuitive use without instruction manuals – seamlessly aligning with the UX strategy behind the broader NuFACE product line.

By refining every detail – from its seamless unibody form to its ergonomic handling – we’re proud to deliver, professional level, science-backed skincare that empowers users and elevates the NuFACE brand experience.”
Engineering for durability and everyday use
Following preliminary industrial design definition, we created a design for manufacture approach to enhance durability, streamline assembly, and optimise yield in order to satisfy commercial objectives of the new product. The previous FIX MicroWand relied on a multi-part, adhesive-based assembly that introduced complexity, weakened structural integrity, and disrupted the product’s visual cohesion. To address this, we developed a unibody construction that eliminated joints and adhesives. By integrating snap-fit and ultrasonic welding techniques, we enhanced durability and simplified waterproofing to meet ingress protection standards. This approach not only improved reliability in humid environments, like the bathroom, and harsh conditions like a handbag, but also delivered a cleaner, more seamless aesthetic.
Manufacturing inefficiency was another key challenge, driven by a high part count, adhesive use, and variability in assembly. We tackled this by redesigning the product for streamlined production – reducing components, removing adhesives, and optimising for consistency. This design-for-manufacture strategy lowered costs, cut waste, and ensured the FIX MicroWand could scale effectively, while maintaining the premium quality expected from NuFACE.
Our approach focused on precision and purpose – by rethinking the FIX MicroWand’s construction from the inside out, we eliminated complexity to enhance durability, streamline manufacturing, and improve sustainability. The unibody design and adhesive-free assembly not only elevate waterproofing and reliability but also enable efficient, scalable production for real-world use.”
Redefining portable skincare through innovation and design
The FIX MicroWand extends NuFACE’s presence in the fast-growing at-home skincare market by aligning with the refreshed product line, and enhancing durability and usability. It sets a new benchmark for portable beauty tech, supporting brand loyalty and enabling deeper engagement through personalised skincare.
Designed for precision treatment of delicate areas like the eyes, lips, and expression lines, its slim unibody form and microcurrent spheres offer both targeted performance and portability. The reduced part count improves grip and manoeuvrability, while the matte white finish and metallic accents reflect NuFACE’s clinical yet premium brand identity. Its upright stance on a vanity or sink reinforces both usability and visual presence.
By bringing elegance, ergonomic precision, and durability to a compact skincare device, the FIX MicroWand not only elevates the NuFACE product offering but positions the brand at the forefront of science-backed, design-forward self-care. The Trinity+, developed in parallel with our support, was named one of TIME’s Best Inventions of 2024 – a reflection of how world-class design and engineering can become a key market differentiator. The FIX MicroWand, launched in January 2025, is poised to become a new cornerstone of NuFACE’s global product ecosystem.
