The internet is critical to the growth of the UK economy. At the same time, online banking, social networking and ‘online government’ have transformed how we live. Such changes are not without risk: cybercrime is estimated to cost the UK billions of pounds a year.
To secure the UK against cyber attack, the government published its National Cyber Security Strategy. This identified the actions it would take and set aside £860 million for delivery. Since then, we have worked with a lead government department to provide business design, engineering and sourcing advice. We have helped enable security in cyberspace, protect our way of life and deliver economic growth.
Our work enabled production of a guide – Cyber Security Guidance for Business – to help senior executives safeguard their interests. In addition, we supported the Cyber Incident Response pilot to connect businesses with certified companies that can help them respond to cyber attack. We also helped to introduce two schemes: one to certify over 750 specialists working for UK government; and another to assure the effectiveness of commercial security products. The first product, assured under the latter scheme, has saved Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs £2.4 million.
