The PA/AMFA initiative
For the past 15 months, PA has collaborated with AMFA, a South African Section 21, not-for-gain organisation based in Johannesburg, to seek funding from public and private sources for a pilot project to enhance existing pharmaceutical manufacturing capabilities and build greater capacity in Sub-Saharan Africa.
The goal of this project is to produce and distribute low cost, high quality, essential medicines on time in Africa for Africa. Beyond enabling Africa to better meet its own healthcare needs, the initiative will result in economic development including job creation, training and leadership development. Because of its focus on building capacity in Africa to meet Africa's own needs, the pilot project has been labelled 'An African solution to an African problem.
The project draws on an integrated set of skills, expertise and resources from several of PA's practices, including: Life sciences and healthcare, Product and process engineering, Infrastructure and development services, strategy and marketing, Manufacturing, and People and organisational change.
Jerry Bratkovich is a member of PA's Management group in the Life sciences and healthcare practice. His primary role is expanding PA's Healthcare practice in the US and linking it with PA's global involvement in the health sector. Jerry is a recognised expert in management issues with a particular expertise in helping organisations align resources in response to market needs. Jerry, a graduate of Wheaton College, has served on the boards of public, private, non-profit and educational organisations. He has been actively involved with Affordable Medicines For Africa for several years and leads PA's support of the AMFA initiatives.
Richard Wagner is founder chairman and chief executive of US based AMFA Foundation Inc. and Affordable Medicines For Africa (AMFA), a South African Section 21 not-for-gain organisation. Based in Johannesburg, South Africa, his work with AMFA has taken him throughout the African continent where he works with Christian mission hospitals, African pharmaceutical manufacturers, supply-chain companies and quality assurance testing laboratories. Prior to AMFA, Mr. Wagner spent nearly 30 years with for-profit businesses in Chicago, Illinois, holding various positions including executive vice president with international catalogue/retailer Spiegel, Inc., and president and chief executive officer with two divisions of the worldwide advertising company, Young & Rubicam Inc.

AMFA
Affordable Medicines For Africa, a faith-based organization (FOB), is headquartered in Johannesburg, South Africa. Its primary goal is to ensure a reliable supply of high quality and affordable essential medicines through a timely and efficient distribution system. AMFA sources as much of its products as possible from African manufactures that conform to BP/US Pharmacopoeial standards. AMFA works with the Centre for Quality Assurance of Medicines (CENQAM), a World Health Organizations designated quality assurance testing laboratory. CENQAM tests pharmaceutical products supplied by AMFA to ensure product quality. Given that many of the factors affecting the quality of medicines in Africa can be directly or indirectly attributed to the long supply chains for drugs coming from international sources, AMFA is dedicated to enhancing the capacity for producing quality medicines where the need is greatest -- in sub-Saharan Africa.
