Thames Water will join PA Consulting Group at the Enterprise Content Management Conference to present their experiences of implementing Web-enabled knowledge management and communications at Thames Water. The presentation, being held at 13.00 in Theatre 1 on 7 October, will focus on Thames Water’s use of Documentum to improve content management across its new Internet and intranet sites to meet its internal and external communication aims on a global scale.
Thames Water, having merged with RWE to become the world's third largest supplier of water and wastewater services, recognized the importance of having Internet and intranet Web sites that reflected its new position and brand. Thames Water also has ambitious plans for ongoing improvement of knowledge sharing across its global business using the new intranet as a starting point.
PA and Thames Water adopted a unified approach that implemented a new technical architecture based on Documentum to simultaneously support the global Internet and intranet sites. This delivered a central store of information that would be accessible to users worldwide, all with a fresh look and feel, consistent with Thames Water’s new corporate style. This was achieved using a uniquely powerful information architecture that provided the foundation for future development to enable rapid deployment of new Web sites while shielding users from any complexities.
Thames Water’s internet site was previously ranked third among leading global utility companies, according to PA’s independent Web site diagnostic service. This tool benchmarks an organization’s online presence against competitors on aspects ranging from branding and content to navigation and interaction. As a result of the new site, the diagnostic indicates it has now moved to equal first.
Thames Water’s Director of Knowledge Management, Peter Hemmings, will be joined by Paul Wendt and Derek Moore, of PA Consulting Group, to present an insight into implementing a major Web-enabled content management system using Documentum, and how this supports the knowledge management programme.
Peter Hemmings of Thames Water says, “The new Web sites developed by PA are helping Thames Water to develop new ways of working and a new company culture following recent growth by acquisition, and they are also helping to deliver strong, consistent communications to employees and customers worldwide. PA provided not only a technical solution but also a content governance structure which supports the creation of further content and Web sites, allowing Thames Water to improve its knowledge management, now and in the future.”
PA’s Jon Hughes says, “Thames Water is unique in appreciating the potential of Web technology to build corporate identity. PA is delighted that our rapid development techniques made it possible to implement the first part of Thames Water's vision in 'Internet time', while simultaneously creating a development environment for the complete global portal.”
