PA OPINION

PA’s response to COVID-19

The COVID-19 pandemic is affecting all our personal and professional lives. In these uncertain times, we’re all striving to keep our businesses running effectively, our public services available and – more than anything – our teams safe. At PA, we’re doing all we can to protect our people while supporting our clients so they can continue to deliver important products and services for their customers and the public, and prepare for a post-COVID-19 future.

Protecting our people

Our people are everything to our firm and their health and safety is of utmost importance. It’s their ingenuity that makes possible the ground-breaking work we deliver for our clients every day. We’re taking a wide range of actions to keep our people as safe as possible while ensuring they can continue to support our clients.

There’s plenty of opinion on what organisations should do. Our view is that by focusing on the experts and science, and communicating the facts, we will best keep our people safe while continuing to serve our clients.

That’s why our dedicated and experienced Incident Management Team uses the latest information from trusted medical professionals in all our countries of operation to constantly update our guidance and adjust the measures we’re taking to keep people safe. We continue to closely monitor the situation across the countries in which we operate, tracking recommendations and directives from international, national, federal, state and local authorities.

We’re also using innovative technologies, including the latest collaboration tools, to ensure our people can continue serving our clients safely and effectively.

Supporting our clients in uncertain times

Our people are passionate about helping the world navigate the challenges ahead. Our clients need us, and we’re doing everything we can to be there for them. And we’re proud that those tasked with responding to the pandemic are asking for our support.

We’re working with governments, public organisations and private businesses to identify the most effective ways of working and the best technologies to introduce and build to keep people safe and save lives. We’re helping transport companies stabilise their businesses, we’re accelerating supply chains, we’re spinning up new digital solutions to keep customer service and R&D trials up and running, and we’re supporting governments with everything from scenario modelling to people and resource scheduling.

Examples of our work include:

  • Our innovation and engineering experts are helping coordinate the UK Government’s call for manufacturers to re-gear factories so they can build ventilators for the NHS. As part of the government’s Ventilator Challenge, our experts have also joined forces with several other medical device development companies from Cambridge, UK, to rapidly develop and manufacture ventilators to meet increased hospital requirements. In mid-April, the first newly-adapted ventilator design received regulatory approval and devices were dispatched to NHS hospitals to support patients with COVID-19. Our CEO-Elect, Panos Kakoullis, spoke by video conference about the effort.
  • We supported NHS England to mobilise thousands of GPs to support the COVID-19 response in GP practices, out of hours services, NHS 111 online and Urgent Care Centres. This involved developing new national contracts, models of employment, on-boarding up to 7,500 retired GPs and developing a national App to support the matching of availability of all GPs to prioritised COVID-19 response work.
  • In a similar project in the US, we’re working with the American College of Chest Physicians (CHEST) and American Thoracic Society (ATS) to match qualified clinical volunteers to communities most in need of their support due to surging patient numbers.
  • In the private sector, we’re working with KwickScreen, a small company based in North London that produces innovative patient privacy screens that are effective at preventing the spread of infection. They already operate globally and the outbreak of COVID-19 has led to a massive increase in demand for their products. We’re helping to optimise their manufacturing and assembly processes to enable them increase production from 30 units per day to 200 units per day, without the need for additional factory space. We’re also helping them plan their operations more effectively in areas such as materials ordering and supplies management, as well as helping to secure additional finance to fund their growth and transform the way in which they engage their customers.
  • To ensure patients with typical care needs are still looked after, we’re helping a leading global pharmaceutical company develop digital home solutions for cancer patients. We’re also finding innovative ways to continue the technical review of device developments via remote working. These remote digital solutions can prevent non-essential hospital visits, avoiding extra exposure and lessening the risk of infection for immune compromised patients.
  • At a time when businesses are clamouring for information on the new routines and habits their people and customers are developing – and their long-term impact – we’ve launched a research programme to answer these questions. ‘Lockdown Unlocked’, led by our digital insight and strategy experts, explores people’s changing lives, moods and behaviours.

We know you depend on our skills and expertise, especially in times like these. We’re bringing the same sense of purpose to meeting this challenge that we do to everything we undertake.

This is an unprecedented situation. And no one is sure exactly when it will end. We’re confident that, as a society, we’ll get through this crisis and emerge stronger for it. We thank all our people whose ingenious work is contributing directly to the response, and our clients for putting their trust in us during this difficult time.

We continue to have those who are personally impacted in our thoughts.
