PA’s response to COVID-19

The COVID-19 pandemic is affecting all our personal and professional lives. In these uncertain times, we’re all striving to keep our businesses running effectively, our public services available and – more than anything – our teams safe. At PA, we’re doing all we can to protect our people while supporting our clients so they can continue to deliver important products and services, and prepare for a post-COVID-19 future.

Protecting our people

Our people are everything to our firm, and their health and safety is of utmost importance. It’s their ingenuity that makes possible the ground-breaking work we deliver for our clients every day. So, we’re continuously adapting to keep our people as safe as possible while ensuring they can continue to support our clients.

There’s plenty of opinion on what organisations should do. Our view is that by focusing on the experts and science, and communicating the facts, we will best keep our people safe while continuing to serve our clients.

That’s why our dedicated and experienced Incident Management Team uses the latest information from trusted medical professionals in all our countries of operation to constantly update our guidance and adjust the measures we’re taking to keep people safe. We continue to closely monitor the situation across the countries in which we operate, tracking recommendations and directives from international, national, federal, state and local authorities.

We’re also using innovative technologies, including the latest collaboration tools, to ensure our people can continue serving our clients safely and effectively. This has been no mean feat for our people who thrive in environments where they can work closely with diverse teams and build strong relationships with colleagues and clients through face-to-face collaboration. Yet their ingenuity has shone through. The phenomenal efforts of our people have meant we continue to deliver great work to a high standard – in 2020, 96 per cent of our clients said they would recommend us.

Supporting our clients in uncertain times

Our people are passionate about building a positive human future – helping the world overcome the challenges of the pandemic and seize the new opportunities of our changed society. Our clients need us, and we’re doing everything we can to be there for them. And we’re proud that those tasked with responding to the pandemic are asking for our support.

We’re working with governments, public organisations and private businesses to identify the most effective ways of working and the best technologies to introduce and build to keep people safe and save lives. We’re helping transport companies stabilise their businesses, we’re accelerating supply chains, we’re spinning up new digital solutions to keep customer service and R&D trials up and running, and we’re supporting governments with everything from scenario modelling to people and resource scheduling.

Examples of our work include:

  • leading the UK’s effort to produce thousands of life-saving ventilators to meet demand during the first wave of the coronavirus pandemic. Our engineers, scientists and government experts brought together the public and private sectors to design new ventilators, put them through clinical trials, get them approved by the medical regulator, and manufacture them at speed. During 2020, everyone who needed a ventilator got one.
  • working with the American College of Chest Physicians (CHEST) and American Thoracic Society (ATS) to match doctors and qualified clinical volunteers to hospitals struggling to cope with surging patient numbers. In just seven days, we defined, developed and launched the digital system, improving patient care by taking strain off physicians during the peak of the pandemic.
  • supporting the Norwegian Directorate of Health to assess, procure and roll out innovative technology that’s providing safer care to citizens. Within a few weeks, we paved the way for the widespread use of video consultations and robotic medicine dispensers across the country, minimising face-to-face contact between vulnerable patients and key workers without impacting care quality.
  • working closely with the UK National Health Service (NHS) to create the NHS Seacole Centre for COVID-19 rehabilitation in just 35 days. It meant everything from co-ordinating building work and local volunteers to recruiting well-trained staff and getting hold of medical equipment. Together, we also set out how the Centre would operate. By mobilising quickly and adapting as the pandemic unfolded, we’ve created a place that helps patients recover fully from the effects of the illness, and frees capacity in local hospitals to deal with new COVID-19 cases.

We’re also using our expertise to uncover, define and share the societal trends that both public and private organisations need to respond to. Our research programme, Lockdown Unlocked, explores people’s changing lives, moods and behaviours across various aspects of their lives. And our whitepaper, A Renewed Imperative, outlines how governments must respond to new expectations by becoming purpose-led, adaptive and collaborative – by being the generation that made public services and society better for all.
