Despite tourism developments in Greater Montego Bay, the Hip Strip has not evolved with the times. Infrastructure (road ways, side walks, power lines, drainage) and many buildings have all fallen into a state of disrepair. Low end souvenir shops all selling products, limited entertainment venues, underdeveloped beach parks, and the proliferation of informal and illicit activities along the Hip Strip have all contributed to economic underperformance and loss of appeal to visitors and residents alike. To achieve its economic potential, the Hip Strip requires both government and private investment that appeals to stay over and cruise visitors, as well as residents of Montego Bay.
Recognising its current state and untapped potential, the Government of Jamaica commissioned PA Consulting Group to prepare a comprehensive redevelopment plan and economic restructuring for the Hip Strip. PA worked closely with government and industry representatives to develop a shared vision for the future of the Hip Strip, explored options its redevelopment and conducted physical planning, economic analysis, and institutional set up for realizing the potential of the Hip Strip.
The redevelopment plan prepared by PA's experts includes physical improvements, new product development, incentives for diversification of business activities, and specific concepts to address safety and security, visitor access and mobility, and themed entertainment and recreation.
PA's recommendations will attract a minimum of US$145 million in Investment, generate 450 construction jobs, generate 1,250 direct jobs within the tourism sector and 1,650 indirect jobs. The plan calls for an additional 419 upscale rooms to the accommodations sector (both from new construction and reopening hotels that are currently close). With improved physical infrastructure and improved service facilities an anticipated annual incremental visitor expenditure of US$45 million is projected.
