Automotive industry leads the way forward in using GSM technology in non-voice applications, says UbiNetics

The automotive industry is leading the way in the use of GSM technology in non-voice applications, according to UbiNetics, the technology venture of PA Consulting.
UbiNetics announced today that it has signed a contract to supply GSM receive-only modules to Motorola Inc., who will integrate them into GSM mobile receiver systems.
Under a collaboration agreement with Trafficmaster Plc, also announced today, Motorola will supply these GSM mobile receiver systems which will be used to deliver dynamic traffic information to in-car navigation systems by means of GSM Cell Broadcast.
The UbiNetics GSM receive-only module uses the European GSM Cell Broadcast standard - recently agreed between Trafficmaster and Mannesmann Autocom GmbH - to collect live traffic information and feed it to in-car navigation systems via the GSM mobile receiver system.
Ali Pourtaheri of UbiNetics, commented:
"Broader applications for GSM technology have been heralded for many years, but the Trafficmaster live traffic information system is the first practical commercial application of non-voice technology. For us, the search is now on for other commercial partners with the insight to exploit this technology in new ways."
David Martell from Trafficmaster added:
"UbiNetics and Motorola combined their technical expertise to produce a low cost mobile receiver system for feeding dynamic traffic information to in-car navigation systems. Within the next three years we expect this technology to be as much a piece of standard vehicle equipment as anti-lock brakes."
Bernhard Laepke, general manager of Motorola’s Integrated Electronics Systems Sector in the Europe, Middle East and Africa region, added:
"Motorola's telematics systems competency and UbiNetics technological innovation and practical application of GSM technology has helped us deliver a state of the art mobile receiver system for motor manufacturers, navigation system manufacturers and European motorists. Motorola's agreements with UbiNetics and Trafficmaster are the beginning of the next wave of European in-car navigation systems with dynamic traffic information.'

Notes to editors
1. The GSM traffic module uses new GSM cell broadcast technology to deliver information to the on-board unit in the UK via the Cellnet network. In Germany Mannesmann will provide the service.
2. Trafficmaster leads the world in traffic detection technology. It provides a range of innovative services to a growing list of partners in the telematics marketplace.
3. Motorola is a global leader in providing integrated communications solutions and embedded electronic solutions, and is one of the world’s largest independent suppliers of electronics to the automotive market. Motorola researches, develops and manufactures semiconductors, electronic components, modules and systems, including telematics solutions for the emerging automotive communications market. Sales to the automotive market in 1998 were $3.2 billion. Total Motorola sales in 1998 were $29.4 billion.
