PA Consulting Group develops leading-edge wireless broadband test equipment for Catapult Communications

19 February 2009

PA Consulting Group, the leading management, systems and technology consulting firm, has developed an important element of a new LTE test system for Catapult Communications Corporation, a provider of network test equipment based in the US.

Test equipment is, by its nature, ahead of the game as its required in the development of handsets and base-stations before they hit the market. This new equipment provides a way of simulating and testing the performance of the next generation of cellular base-stations during their development. The base-stations use LTE (Long Term Evolution), which is the next stage in the development of the third generation cellular communications standard - 3G turning into 4G. It employs new techniques to achieve theoretical wireless broadband data rates of up to 100Mbps, enough for any football fan or mobile gamer.

Using some of the biggest and fastest programmable chips available, PA has applied its experience of flexible radio solutions and skills in system design, signal processing, embedded software and electronic design to deliver the new equipment.

PA’s development programme has delivered the Physical Layer (PHY) processing to Catapult, enabling the delivery of complete test systems by early 2009.

Kalyan Sundhar, VP of Engineering at Catapult Communications Corporation comments:

’PA’s talented team of engineers helped Catapult deliver a first – a high capacity multi-UE LTE load simulation system.  The eighteen month development program combined PA’s expertise in PHY layer development with Catapult’s expertise in building high load generators which resulted in a high quality product.’

Through its Communications and Electronic Systems expertise, PA Consulting Group provides end-to-end solutions for the wireless industry.  PA’s technology-enabled consultancy solutions for operators range from strategy development and business planning through to services creation, network design and roll-out management.  Vendors benefit directly through PA’s services in the design of infrastructure and handset products, marketing and bidding support.
