PA Consulting Group and NHS England win “Cloud Innovation” award in Computer Weekly’s European User Awards for enterprise software

June 2013

In June 2013, PA Consulting Group and NHS England picked up the award for best cloud innovation tool in Computer Weekly’s European User Awards for Enterprise Software. The award recognises innovation through the use of enterprise software and information management.

PA worked with QlikTech and Google Enterprise to develop a cloud-based intelligence tool that gives NHS England the power to analyse its data more efficiently – which in turn can help to improve health outcomes by quickly identifying trends, such as high mortality rates.

The tool’s development brings together over 100 indicators from 15 different national sources, covering NHS England. The activity data measures how healthcare delivery is delivered, including trust performance against A&E waiting targets, and Hospital mortality rates. Analysing complex data on such a large scale is challenging, but PA delivered an intelligent solution which allows NHS England to measure trends in a consistent and effective way. Vitally, the tool presents health commissioners with a single version of the truth, which enables swift decisions and corrective action to be taken.

By using Google Enterprise’s BigQuery product and the QlikView Business Intelligence Discovery platform, PA has improved NHS England’s ability to assess performance within and across providers, spot trends and anomalies quickly, and actively manage the quality of care. The winning solution is unique in that it not only co-ordinates automated data feeds for analysis and reporting, but BigQuery and QlikView allow the user to interactively explore the entire data set in real time.

James Mucklow, IT expert, PA Consulting Group said: “It’s a real coup to win this award and it shows that we are at a hugely exciting time in the development and transformation of both the NHS and healthcare generally. We identified a problem and addressed it using a cost-effective and scalable cloud platform, which has enabled the NHS to collect data in a specific way to help improve the quality of patient care across England.”

Dr Geraint Lewis. Chief Data Officer, NHS England said: “Innovative tools such as NHS England's new cloud-based intelligence tool can provide intelligence that helps improve the accountability, and in turn the quality, equity, and experience of the care delivered by the NHS. I am delighted that the work of PA Consulting Group and NHS England staff on this new tool has been recognised in this European award.”
