CLIENT STORY

SSE: Reducing the cost of electricity in Ireland

The Integrated Single Electricity Market (I-SEM) is the new wholesale electricity market on the island of Ireland. Energy companies like SSE buy and sell electricity to meet the demand of household and business customers across Ireland. In time, this new, more competitive and efficient market should reduce prices and ensure continuity of power.

SSE engaged with PA to help ensure all its overall business design, systems and processes integrated seamlessly into the new marketplace. We embedded a diverse team of business designers, change experts, programme and IT specialists into SSE to design the end-to-end model for operating within the new I-SEM markets. This entailed establishing a robust programme approach and agile ways of working. We also detailed the business processes required to help individual teams understand the inputs and outputs in the new markets.

The secret to the programme’s success was bringing together a team of internal energy experts with external business designers, project expertise, and IT developers. This combination of diverse skillsets enabled the team to develop a collaborative problem-solving culture, which allowed for the smooth development of the new trading and settlement operation.

On the day I-SEM launched, SSE switched on its new systems and teams began to trade electricity in the new energy markets without a hitch. After robust planning and preparation, this successful programme delivered on time, under budget and now lays the foundation to create better value to customers.
