Minuteman Senior Services: Helping the elderly by updating IT and planning for the future

Minuteman Senior Services is a non-profit organization that provides access to a range of services for older people and people with disabilities in Massachusetts. The services include meals on wheels and care at home. They needed to update their technology to meet the changing business requirements and asked for help developing an IT strategy.

Our team soon recognized that the technology wasn’t the real issue. We saw that the strategy would need to reflect Minuteman’s place in the changing US healthcare environment and how they wanted to develop their services in future. In particular, with public funding under pressure, they’d need a different approach if they wanted to grow their population health business by entering the competitive private sector market.

We consulted a wide range of people from executive leadership to field staff to identify the challenges they faced. Those ranged from the fact that all activities were still paper based to a lack of capacity for staff to work remotely. We developed a roadmap and investment plan. These included detailed guidance on getting the basics of the technology right, but also the kind of IT, skills and culture they’d need to grow and develop their business.

Minuteman had anticipated a tactical IT guidance focused on their immediate pain. But our technical and healthcare experts worked together to give more value by developing a much broader strategic plan along with specific IT recommendations. The board appreciated this extra help and the organization now has a clear way forward to make sure they can continue to provide older people with the high quality care they deserve.

"We are so pleased to have partnered with PA around this truly important work here at Minuteman, and are thrilled with the output. PA's ability to frame our current status and opportunities in the context of changes in the healthcare industry reinforced the need to make significant investments in IT for streamlining current operations and enabling future growth.”
