In 2008, our client, a global drilling contractor, wanted to improve drilling operations by exploiting real time data and providing secure remote support to new types of industrial control systems (ICS) on some of their new semi-submersible drillings rigs.
Based on our industrial security experience and capability in Oil & Gas digital oilfields, PA was approached to design a secure communications solution to address the requirements and manage the security risks. Following the initial success, and the increasing demand for connectivity and data to support business decisions, we were asked to further develop the solution into an industry leading and remote real time data platform.
For the last 7 years, PA has been working with the client to define connectivity requirements, develop and implement standardised security architecture on the client’s rigs. Third parties can securely access the industrial systems from anywhere in the world, providing 24-hour support to drilling operations in the real-time diagnosis and fixing of faults. Improvements in safety have also been realised through the remote real-time monitoring of on board critical safety systems. This minimises the need for staff to travel offshore.
The benefits of this connectivity platform have far exceeded the client and vendors’ expectations. It is agile, flexible and efficient to deploy, and it is intended that all rigs will be connected by 2018.
This development is at the heart of the client’s long term operational performance strategy. This scalable infrastructure is realising a truly digital oilfield that provides 24/7 secure access to systems and live operational data. As a result, it has enabled the client to save millions of pounds a year through improving operational performance and minimising downtime.
