GREAT(Galileo REceiver for the mAss markeT)

Leading the way to best-in-class price and performance

PA Consulting Group led a consortium of six European organizations as part of a series of programs funded by the Galileo Joint Undertaking. Over a two-year period, this consortium, referred to as GREAT (short for REceiver for the mAss markeT),has delivered a library of demonstrable core technology intellectual property with the aim of kick-starting future receiver developments.

Galileo is Europe’s new global satellite navigation system, and will provide European nations with an independent positioning system. Within the Galileo environment, high-volume Mass Market Receivers are key to opening up the market for precision location services and to increasing technology adoption. Galileo will therefore offer European companies with opportunities in a growing sector whose annual market is estimated to be over EUR 200 billion in 2020 with 3 billion receivers in service.

Funded through part of the second call of the sixth Framework Program (FP6) for Galileo Research and Development, GREAT consists of five other satellite navigation experts from across Europe, including a Spanish SME with extensive RF design experience for satellite and communications systems, a German Aerospace Center, well-versed in satellite navigation and communication, mobile radio and aeronautical communications, a leading German developer and provider of innovative digital wireless communications products, Finnish experts in algorithm design for GNSS systems, and a leading Swiss fabless developer and manufacturer of GPS chipsets and GPS receiver modules.

The GREAT consortium has developed technologies that exploit the special characteristics of the Galileo signal to deliver real benefit to Europe’s consumer and location based services market. Work has included the development of novel front-end RF designs, and baseband technology, as well as the advanced algorithms for multipath mitigation, reduced TTFF and for an efficient PVT solution, considering all the requirements for a mass market receiver.

The technology development has focused on improving the user experience of consumers in the critical scenarios seen in urban environments – urban canyons and indoor transitions. The research’s goal has been to allow the Galileo signal to be used in urban and indoor locations; the research focuses on technology suitable for use in new and next generations of mobile phones (3G and beyond) and similar products, allowing a wide range of location based services to be deployed effectively.
