PA Consulting Group (PA), supported by Frontier Economics, has been appointed by Ofgem to support the scoping phase of the roll out of smart electricity and gas meters to every household in Great Britain by 2020.
Smart meters will transform the supply and consumption of energy in Great Britain and will play a key role in the transition to a low carbon economy. The meters will provide energy consumers with real-time information about their energy use and will enable them to monitor and reduce their energy consumption. They will support improved energy efficiency advice and facilitate smoother, faster switching between suppliers. They will also help deliver improved network responsiveness and efficiency, ensuring investment is optimally targeted. Their introduction is a key step towards a smart grid and a critical enabler towards the government’s goals of energy security and carbon reduction.
The Department of Energy and Climate Change has responded to consultation on smart metering and appointed Ofgem to manage the first phase, scoping. PA will now work with Ofgem, in outlining the requirements for smart meters, home displays and communications; developing the approach to industry wide communications and data management; pioneering the roll-out strategy and identifying the key components of the regulatory regime to underpin the successful deployment of smart meters.
As Bob Hull, Acting Managing Director, Commercial, at Ofgem E-Serve, says:
“The roll out of smart meters to households and small and medium enterprise customers across Great Britain is an exciting task that will underpin the future of energy supply in Great Britain. It is a complex task and one of the biggest changes the energy industry has seen for some time and we are delighted to be working with the PA and Frontier team in developing a solid scoping approach that will ensure success.”
Tony Wood, Programme Director at PA Consulting Group, says:
“Our consultants will be supporting the strategic oversight and direction of the rollout, setting out the design, deployment and operation of smart electricity and gas metering. We are delighted to be working on a project that will have a major influence on the transition to a low carbon economy in Great Britain.”
