PA Consulting Group wins UK IT Industry Award for ‘Big Data Project of the Year’ for NHS England

14 November 2013

PA Consulting Group was last night awarded a UK IT Industry Award in the Project Excellence category, for ‘Big Data Project of the Year’ for its project for NHS England.

The winning project with NHS England was delivered by PA using technology from QlikView and Google Enterprise to develop a cloud-based intelligence tool to give NHS England the power to analyse its data more efficiently and help to improve health outcomes by quickly identifying trends, such as high mortality rates. The tool’s development brings together over 100 indicators from 15 different national sources, covering NHS England. The activity data measures how healthcare delivery is delivered, including trust performance against A&E waiting targets, and Hospital mortality rates. Analysing complex data on such a large scale is challenging, but PA delivered an intelligent solution which allows NHS England to measure trends in a consistent and effective way. Vitally, the tool presents health commissioners with a single version of the truth, which enables swift decisions and corrective action to be taken.

PA’s intelligent solution allowed NHS England to measure trends in a consistent and effective way as well as improving patient care and reducing costs. Vitally, it presents health commissioners with one centralised database, allowing them to make swift decisions and for corrective action to be taken.

James Mucklow, IT expert at PA Consulting Group, who led the NHS England project, said: “Winning this award shows that there are tangible and really innovative success stories out there using business intelligence today. This project with Google and QlikView has been very exciting and means we have been able to build a system in a couple of days as opposed to months.”

Dr Geraint Lewis, Chief Data Officer, NHS England said: “Innovative tools such as NHS England's new cloud-based intelligence tool can provide intelligence that helps improve the accountability, and in turn the quality, equity, and experience of the care delivered by the NHS. I am delighted that the work of PA Consulting Group and NHS England staff on this new tool has been recognised in this award.”
