Bret Schroeder, healthcare expert at PA Consulting Group, is quoted in The New York Times discussing the frenzy of mergers and other alliances taking place in the U.S. healthcare sector. 

Bret says: "After the last wave of mergers that took place a few years ago, the hospitals didn’t use that opportunity to bring their costs down. They still aren’t that much more efficient than they were.”  

Bret notes that getting hospitals to change as a result of these mergers will remain difficult. “It’s very hard for an industry that has been fairly monopolistic within a region to think way outside of the box."
