How IT can light up policing

Tim Anderson

The Guardian

19 December 2013

PA Consulting Group’s Neil Amos and David Paul, policing experts, have taken part in a guardian roundtable event on the role of technology in police work.

The roundtable was attended by leaders in policing including PCCs, chief constables, national leaders and IT sector experts, who discussed how modern technology has the potential to transform the police but it also examined why many forces are still using out of date IT. Members went to on express their frustration at the gap between what is technically possible and what is currently achieved.

The round table also heard about some inspiring examples, but conceded that the pace of change can be frustrating and pointed out that changes at the centre made by successive governments have resulted in lack of overall direction.

Other key points from the roundtable included the need to share data effectively with partner agencies and ensuring flexible IT contracts with IT providers to create a more agile future. One participant at the roundtable concluded that, although the challenges are real, there is huge potential for new technologies in policing.
