University leaders fear a third will go bankrupt

The Daily Telegraph

25 June 2013

The Daily Telegraph has published insight from PA Consulting Group’s annual survey of higher education leaders. The piece leads with the findings that more than half of those surveyed expect to see some universities go bust, and more than three-quarters anticipate mergers and takeovers in the sector. Increased competition among universities, at a time of falling demand, is the key force behind the changes.
The article quotes the survey’s co-author, Mike Boxall, PA higher education expert, who comments: “It is clear that we are witnessing a sea-change in the dynamics of higher education. Leaders no longer expect funding or innovative thinking from official sources and government funding is no longer part of providers’ survival plans.”
