Lee Howells, head of artificial intelligence (AI) at PA Consulting, is quoted in RBS Content Live.
The key to successfully implementing AI in any business, Lee says, is to make sure you’re asking the right questions.
“Companies often ask me: ‘What is AI and what can it do for me?’ but that’s probably the wrong question for an organisation to ask. AI is a technology and you shouldn’t be technology-led; you should be business-led. You should be looking to see where your business problems are and if a technology such as AI can help you solve them,” he adds.
The article explains that there are broadly three key areas where AI can help, starting with data. “Most companies are collecting data in one way or another but there are very few that are using it,” Lee continues. “Machine learning and AI is a very easy way to generate insight from that data that you can go on to take advantage of,” he continues.
The article then goes on to explain that implementing AI doesn’t have to be a costly exercise.
Lee says that the beauty of AI is that it doesn’t require expensive infrastructure like other emerging technologies such as biometrics or contactless, so businesses of any size can experiment with it.
“Our advice is think big, start small,” he says. “Just experiment and get out there because inertia is your biggest problem. If you start doing it you will learn so much in one project. Then you can scale up.”
