The web provides opportunities for food producers to sell directly to the consumer

“We have got to a point where there are new opportunities for food producers. It is not about avoiding stores completely, but producers should ask whether it is possible to start selling directly to consumers.”

Erik Fagerlid, PA retail expert, has been interviewed in Nationen, a Norwegian daily newspaper. Erik explains that consumers in Norway will increasingly buy food directly from producers.

Erik explains: “We have got to a point where there are new opportunities for food producers. It is not about avoiding stores completely, but producers should ask whether it is possible to start selling directly to consumers.”

Erik continues: “By relying on grocery chains, producers make it harder for themselves. They should think about alternative strategies, including sales and distribution direct to the consumer. Small producers should not pioneer this approach. Larger producers should take the lead.”

Referring to the success of this approach internationally, Erik explains: “The most important thing is to make it easy for consumers to buy and collect goods. People could have goods delivered to their work, or at petrol stations so they can pick them up on the way home from work.”
