Cyber threats

Arise News

13 February 2015

PA Consulting Group’s Mark Skilton, a digital business expert, is interviewed on Arise News. Mark comments on a speech made by Obama, in which he called on technology firms to share more information with government, as well as each other, to tackle cybercrime.

Mark discusses some of the issues around cyber security and explains that there are two key areas: privacy of personal data and national security as outlined by Obama.

Cyber crime is a continuous war, explains Mark. He says that the UK needs to stay ahead of cyber attacks and keep legislation moving forward. He goes on to say that as technology races ahead, the law and society need to move at the same pace.

Mark says that major companies like Apple need to set the standard for other companies. He describes it as an ecosystem, where if one area in a company is weak, the rest of the areas are weaker as a result. “One of the new mind-sets for the second half of the decade is to think in a pluralistic way. We need to learn how to think in a broader sense when it comes to security and this is a challenge for governments and for us at home. We need to have a new set of standards and thinking,” says Mark.

He concludes: “There are lots of new things going on and we need to keep track of them all; government can’t do this themselves, they need to work with industry.”
