PA Consulting’s Michael Schweikl, automotive expert, is quoted in an article in Automobilwoche. The article is dedicated to PA’s annual CO2 research, which reveals that car makers will face EU fines for failing to hit their limits on carbon dioxide.
Europe's car makers are fighting against imminent fines by the EU Commission. Those whose new-car fleet does not reach the calculated CO2 emissions target by the end of 2020 will have to pay €95 per gram of CO2 emitted above the target. Automobilwoche presents the current forecast by PA Consulting; eight of the thirteen manufacturers investigated risk being punished. Volkswagen could face a fine of €1.4 billion, Fiat-Chrysler could pay around €700 million and PSA could pay €600 million. Volvo, Toyota, Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi and Honda will most likely be spared.
For some, there’s still a chance for better news: “In our aggressive scenario, we see Hyundai-Kia, BMW and Daimler, but also PSA, Mazda and the Volkswagen Group could narrow the gap,” explains PA Consulting automotive expert Michael Schweikl. In this scenario, the consultants have calculated that e-cars are massively pushed into the market through discounts and other incentives, that high-emission engines are phased out, or that the supply of CO2-intense vehicles will be tightened differently.
However, for Fiat Chrysler and Ford, according to current status, it is almost impossible to reach the targets before 2021, even in an aggressive scenario. PA calculates the worst case for Fiat Chrysler would be a deviation of 3.5g CO2/km and 2.9g CO2/km for Ford.
