The rebirth of manufacturing

The rebirth of manufacturing

IT would be great to think that UK plc could once again become a manufacturing powerhouse but your article misses three key challenges that need to be overcome before that vision could be realised.

First, manufacturing has truly globalised. Even prestige manufacturers no longer rely on the "made in Britain" brand. For example, the Aston Martin Rapide will be built in Graz, Austria, by Magna Steyr.

Second, UK plc needs to focus on those areas where, over the longer term, a strategic competitive advantage can be established or re-established, with skills support from government.

Finally, the UK needs to build a high-tech industrial base. That will require an improved supply of talent in high-tech, R&D and engineering functions. Building that skills base will require a big change in attitude to careers in engineering and science.
