In his regular blog, PA Digital Business expert Søren Lehn comments on a new trend, where people are able to connect via the internet in real time not only with each other but also with machines, gadgets and devices. Søren refers to this as the ‘digital connectome’.
“The complex mass of elements in the internet holds opportunities that we haven’t even begun to imagine yet. It will change companies’ business models and transform the way we live and work,” writes Søren.
According to Søren, one of the most noticeable things about this trend is automation. Today, people can use digital technologies to control their coffee machines, monitor their homes and manage their health, all remotely. The focal point of this is the tablets we use in our everyday lives. In the long term, these connected units, of which there are 3.2 billion worldwide, will be able to interact directly with people.
“If companies are to survive and thrive in a world where digital automation takes over, they need to adapt and re-invent themselves, and think of completely new business models,” says Søren.
