Thomas points out that until now, driving comfort, dynamics, safety and functionality were bought at the expense of increasing vehicle weight. Today customer expectations for fuel consumption, as well as legislative requirements for CO₂ targets, foster a mind-set shift. Weight reduction in vehicle manufacturing is now a growing market with huge potential.

In their article, Thomas explains that there are various opportunities for weight reduction. This requires extremely close collaboration between car makers and their suppliers across the value chain, as well as contributions from engineering providers and research institutes. Thomas also notes that collaboration creates opportunity, as already demonstrated for electric vehicles and mobility. This collaboration towards weight reduction manufacturing provides the opportunity to achieve CO₂ targets.
