Supporting the production of life-saving new ventilators for the NHS

As the full scale and impact of the coronavirus became evident, the UK Government appealed to UK manufacturers to quickly accelerate the production of ventilators.

We’ve facilitated the combined effort of some of the country’s top organisations in electronics, software development, human factors, design, thermodynamics and regulatory knowledge to produce the new Penlon Prima ES02 ventilator device at unprecedented speed.

Uniting competitors around a common purpose

This initiative has united competing businesses during an unprecedented public health emergency, with hundreds of experts working night and day in close cooperation.

By bringing together diverse sets of skills across multiple organisations, including Penlon, McLaren, Ford and various suppliers, the team rapidly adapted existing ventilator designs to create the Penlon device within just four weeks – an extraordinary feat of engineering and ingenuity. This is a fully intubated mechanical ventilator designed to provide support to critically ill patients – including volume and pressure controlled ventilation. It’s gained regulatory approval from the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency, and the first set of devices has now been dispatched for use on the NHS front line.

Through our efforts, we’ve proudly worked with government and industry to resolve an urgent national need, protect the health service and save lives. And the story continues. We’re now coordinating efforts to scale the production of the new ventilators and meet the initial government order of 15,000 units.
