Project: Encouraging sustainable behaviours in school

The School of Pi is a modular system that monitors and visualises sustainable behaviours, creating a competitive league within the school and potentially between multiple schools. Central to the system is the School of Pi Desk. This gathers sustainability readings from a variety of Pi sensing modules via a shared cloud database. It then groups these readings according to school, area within the school and module type.

Schools can choose the modules that highlight their needs. For some, this will be all about reducing road traffic by encouraging cycling, while others might want energy consumption to be the key focus. Whatever the needs, we believe the School of Pi can rise to the challenge! It is a simple-to-build kit that can evolve with the needs of the school.

The School of Pi Desk is based on a Raspberry Pi 4, utilising the dual monitor capabilities to display the captured data for a school in a tabular form on one screen and the overall sustainability score with environmental display on the other. As the score increases, the image becomes progressively greener.

Each module is based on a Raspberry Pi Zero connected to an appropriate detecting device. The module will monitor and record the relevant data and publish it to a MySQL database in the cloud, where the School of Pi system picks it up.

Through a connected web of School of Pi systems, schools can hold national and regional competitions. The School of Pi has a separate page to display the school’s individual performance and another page to access other schools’ sustainability performance.
