The largest room is named ‘Koelschip’, which literally translates as ‘cooling ship’, named after its historical role in the brewing process. It is located on the brewery’s top floor, 30 metres above ground level. Until the 1960s, hot beer wort was cooled here, simply by opening the many windows. Today, the impressive room with its beautiful copper-plated bar, has a spacious balcony that offers a breathtaking view of the heart of Amsterdam.

Our speaking sessions

4 October: Session 15 – “Business Models, the need to adapt: Creating new business & optimizing existing operations”

Business Challenges and Opportunities in distributed energy markets

Utility business models and revenue streams have been under increasing pressure in recent years, primarily through the growth in the level of distributed energy resources (solar, batteries, EVs) on distribution networks, which are driving new thinking and action around the concept of distributed markets. In line with this new thinking is also the rise of customer expectations around how they would like to engage and participate in a new energy relationship, and the role of regulators in leading or facilitating the changes required to realize the promise of this new utility world.

This presentation makes the case for a practical and agile business strategy into action style approach to a distributed energy business transformation that ensures the promise of technology does not overwhelm the needs, aspirations or viability of the business, and will be based on experience from successful projects in the US and Europe.

Peter Siggins

Speaker: Peter Siggins

Peter is an energy & utilities expert at PA Consulting Group, specializing in strategy development and business transformation in the energy & utilities sector.

He is a leading adviser to energy & utility companies facing significant market uncertainties and opportunities due to changes in policy and regulation around clean energy, significant technological developments around distributed energy resources, and the modernization of the electric distribution grid.  All of these factors call into question future strategies and business models for regulated and unregulated energy businesses. He has recently returned to the UK, having spent the last 15 years working with energy companies in the United States.

4 October: Hub Session 26 – “Data to Reinvent Asset Management”

Business Driven Grid Analytics Capability Deployment

Utility analytics has exploded in the last few years primarily driven by the hype around big data, data science and advanced analytics technologies, and is now seen as a strategic lever to improve assets, operations and customer satisfaction. Despite this drive many utilities are still struggling to implement analytics, either not knowing where to start, not knowing how to scale from pilot developments or attempting technology/vendor driven approaches. Our presentation makes the argument for a business led and driven analytics capability deployment approach, enabled by advanced technologies and data science, based on experience from successful projects in the US and Sweden.

Glen Mannering

Speaker: Glen Mannering

Glen is a senior management consultant with proven track record of assessing and improving the business operations and IT enablement of Energy & Utilities organisations.
