BP: Cutting emissions by rewarding action to advance low carbon

Across the world, BP teams and partner organisations are working on ways to lower carbon, by reducing emissions from operations, improving their products and creating low carbon businesses. These activities come from all parts of the organisation. They include more advanced lubricants and petrochemicals, renewable energy businesses and lower carbon oil and gas production. There’s now an annual programme to recognise, celebrate and promote their work to advance low carbon.

We’ve helped BP develop its Advancing Low Carbon (ALC) accreditation programme, which awards a brand mark to activities that meet a robust set of criteria. Teams first have to provide evidence to prove they’re meeting the programme’s measures. This is verified internally by BP’s experts and then externally and independently assured. So far, they’ve accredited 33 activities. These include work to develop aircraft fuel based on recycled cooking oil and a new kind of concrete that reduces its carbon footprint by up to 70 per cent compared to traditional concrete.

The programme is an important way for BP to motivate and reward staff and to show external stakeholders how they’re putting their low carbon strategy into practice. Activities accredited so far have saved or offset 18m* tonnes of CO2 equivalent, with BP partners saving or offsetting another 4.3m* tonnes.

We helped devise the programme, the accreditation process and its assessment criteria and then supported BP in running the programme during its first year. We also developed internal and external communications to help publicise the programme as a key pillar in BP’s wider low carbon strategy.

*Estimated to two significant figures and provided on a 100% gross basis. The figures are aimed at illustrating the impact of the programme as a whole rather than a quantification of specific savings made by BP or by BP partners.
