Who you pay, and how much do they want?
In its Mobile WiMAX whitepaper, the WiMAX Forum states: ' a less onerous IPR model will lead to a substantial reduction in equipment prices and fair treatment of vendors without essential IPR, which in turn will increase competition in the market and the attractiveness of WiMAX to network operators.'
It is currently unclear if the WiMAX Forum’s aim will be delivered.
Realistically WiMAX that is totally free from Essential IPR issues is unlikely to happen – some vendors have already indicated they intend to assert their IPR.
It is more likely that WiMAX will follow a similar route to that of 3G. Licensing, cross-licensing and litigation are rife – and it’s a multi-billion dollar cost to the industry.
It is therefore vital for vendors to understand the patent landscape and the likely behaviours of the key players.
