Product development
Integrated product and process development (IPPD)
To launch a successful product you need an effective process to manufacture it. Obvious really – but it's surprising how often the manufacturing implications are ignored. In some cases the decision to launch and commitment to a launch date and advertising is made before the manufacturing and production functions have become involved. This can lead to significant commercial issues such as:
- delayed launch
- high manufacturing costs
- product recall through process problems and inadequate quality control
- inability to meet demand
- excessive and unnecessary capital spend.
The integration of all the interested functions into the product development project team is vital if problems are to be minimized. PA is involved in both the development of the product design and also in manufacturing and process equipment design and development. Even at the initial ideation and concept selection stage we believe it is essential to have begun considering the manufacturing process implications. This provides a more complete view of the impact of each concept and highlights the cost, time and risk implications. The decision to progress new product ideas can then be made with a clear picture of the total implications of development.
Continuing this close liaison throughout the subsequent development phases facilitates the concurrent development of the product with the manufacturing process leading to:
- optimized processes
- lowest manufacturing cost
- minimum timeframes to launch
- maximized product quality
- maximized revenue streams following launch and roll out.
