Increasing growth through process competence
Process competence - or rather process incompetence - can make or break a manufacturing firm operating in a competitive market.
In the classic Boston matrix, it is no accident that the first box, representing business opportunity, is denoted by a question mark. It says: “I know there is an opportunity here, but how am I going to address this?”
Unfortunately many companies find themselves having to answer this question under time pressure to get to market, struggling with limited funds and resources, and without properly aligning all the technical capabilities that are actually available. Unless their process competence is already tried and tested they will lose out to their better organized competitors, achieving a lower return on their investment, being slower to market, and generating less profit than they were capable of.
Overcoming these problems is possible by optimizing your process competence: reviewing your process technology base in order to develop new business with products that can be made with this technology. This is a low-pain way to grow, and can allow you rapidly to enter markets that are currently out of reach with minimal risk.
