Patents are assets that may be traded, licensed or used for security; but patents have little value unless they can be exploited.
The route to patent exploitation starts with the patent owner understanding what end products the patent relates to, and what benefits can be created by having the monopoly offered by the patent; or which organisations are potential licensees.
The owner must also know what prior art is likely to be used to invalidate the patent in the event of asserting against an alleged infringer. Infringement is often difficult to prove; the more effort that is made ahead of time the better the chances of success.
Patent evaluation services
PA's proven patent evaluation process provides our clients with expert technical evaluations of patents for a variety of reasons:
- We provide expert opinion on the potential essentiality of patents to standards. We determine whether patents are related to particular standards. If a patent is found to be essential we will indicate the relevant standard to which the patent would be applicable.
- Our evaluations provide evidence of how patents are routinely used in commercial products. Clients wish to know their immediate application, and area of the system that the patent applies to.
- We help clients identify tests that demonstrate infringement.
PA’s Global Technology Group (GTG) is deeply involved in technology development across a variety of technologies and sectors including wireless communications, pharmaceutical and healthcare, manufacturing and fast moving consumer goods.
In addition to technology development GTG provides intellectual property services based on our engineering skills. Since the mid-1990s we have been supplying patent evaluation services to our clients across a range of technologies.
