Snapshot of the life of a Programme and project management consultant
One month at a leading international pharmaceutical company
|
Week 1
I leave home each day at 7am to travel to the client's site. I'm based full-time at a pharmaceutical company that is split between the US and the UK. As project manager, I'm leading a team through a large IT implementation programme. This week we have agreed the scope of a number of workshops with the management team, and held the first of them via videoconference with the US, on Tuesday evening.
On Thursday evening, I came back to the office to go to my practice's social event - good to meet up with some colleagues I haven't seen for a while. |

Week 2
A colleague and I delivered a key two-day workshop with senior technical and programme management staff. This meant staying for two nights in a hotel near the client site. The workshop was fun, but a challenge to get 15 people to agree to a complex process! We got some great feedback from the client however, which proved to be useful for the next stage of work.
To celebrate, we had a team dinner with the client on Wednesday evening. Managed to go for a quick swim in the hotel the next morning to freshen up! |

Week 3
On Monday morning before arriving at the client site, I helped tutor (remotely) a number of new recruits in a module of our on-line induction training programme - this took about an hour.
The PA teamed gained approval from the client for the work so far and asked us to put a bid together to the CEO for the next stage of work - he needs it by Monday!
I left the client site on Friday afternoon to go back to the office. I'm a member of a new Integrated Sector Team and I needed to attend the first meeting. The group was set up to broaden our expertise and propositions in particular industry sectors. |

Week 4
The CEO approved the proposal and we will now be staying on to support the client for a further six months.
On Monday, I was asked to conduct some interviews early Tuesday morning at the office with some applicants to the practice, and so spent the evening reviewing CVs. However, I made up for this with a night out with the PA team on Tuesday night to celebrate winning the extension of the client work. |
