What is it?
The term 'wirelessness' covers all aspects of wireless data communications. The simplest way to consider it is by the size of the wireless network:
Wireless personal area networks (WPANs)
Encompassing infrared, Bluetooth and other cable replacement technologies.
Wireless local area networks (WLANs)
Encompassing the increasingly popular technologies that enable wireless networks in homes and offices.
Wireless Metropolitan Area Networks (WMANs)
Encompassing the technologies that enable fixed wireless broadband.
Wireless wide area networks (WWANs)
Encompassing the technologies used in mobile telephones (GSM, GPRS and 3G cellular networks), and soon to include very large WMAN-type technologies.
