Universal translation
What is it?
The use of computers to assist in translating between languages is not a new idea. The first public demonstration of such machine translation occurred in 1954 at Georgetown University with the translation of 49 Russian sentences into English using a 250-word vocabulary and six grammar rules.
Technology has advanced considerably since those days and computers are now routinely used to assist in linguistic translation. Universal translation represents the ultimate goal of the machine translation movement – the ability to glean the meaning from phrases in a given language, and convey it in any other language. To add to the technology challenge, universal translation ultimately aims to deliver this capability in real time!
