Pervasive computing
What is it?
Pervasive computing (also known as ubiquitous computing) is the term applied to a vision of the next major trend in information communications technology. It describes a world where computers are increasingly integrated into the environment around us, enabling us to interact with them in much more natural, useful, and intuitive ways.
In the pervasive computing world everything from cars, buildings and objects to people are able to communicate with one another and to share information and applications through an adaptable and seamless network. It is also about an ideal – that any data, application, or information service can be delivered to any device, over any network. Pervasive computing seeks to break the bonds that currently tie users to devices, devices to networks, and applications to both of these, thereby enabling a more direct relationship between users and applications regardless of the device and network being used.
Achieving the pervasive computing vision is a big challenge that involves the integration of many disparate IT and network resources and the development of new business models to exploit the increasingly connected world. It involves the transformation of the global data network that we call the Internet into a pervasive medium that connects users to personalised universes of dynamic content, applications, and services, via any smart connected device.
