Intelligent buildings
What is it?
A number of definitions have been offered as to what constitutes an intelligent building, but we favor that put forward by civil engineering and architectural firm Arup – “one in which the building fabric, space, services, and information systems can respond in an efficient manner to the initial and changing demands of the owner, the occupier, and the environment.”
The concept of the intelligent building began to crystallize in the early 1980s when trade publications began to run features on automated systems to make buildings are energy efficient, alongside others that discussed how IT and telecommunications might also be used automate in-building functions and improve efficiency. Intelligent buildings are sometimes referred to as integrated buildings to account for the interconnection of building systems needed to make them self-supporting.
