Biometrics
What is it?
The term biometrics is used to describe a collection of technologies concerned with confirming the identity of individuals based on their fixed and unique physical characteristics. Biometrics in use today include fingerprint, iris, hand geometry, voice scanning and face recognition technologies.
The field of biometrics has been gaining prominence over the last 10 years and has now reached a level of maturity where the technology can be applied with acceptable levels of success, and at a reasonable price point.
Independent research suggests that no single biometric technology is 100% infallible and different technologies have strengths and weaknesses that make them more or less applicable in particular applications. Increasingly, multiple biometrics are used together to provide a stronger authentication and reduce the risk of error.
