What is the difference between mineral water and tap water? Quite a lot I discovered. When I arrived at one of IntensData’s offices to see the 'Green IT' award-winner for myself, I was carrying my customary bottle of mineral water. My interviewee, CIO John Bradey, began by telling me off! “Mineral water is an awful use of resources you know. What’s the point of bringing the stuff all the way from France when it falls out of the sky right here?”
I suppose I should have expected it as this is the attitude that won this year’s Green IT category at the Business Excellence Awards. IT operations here have been carbon neutral since 2015. IntensData helps businesses to interpret the vast quantities of data generated from wireless sensor technologies. This allows them to develop new services and find ways to improve their business processes.
IntensData has grown rapidly in the past five years, and with this growth has come increasing demand on its IT. The resulting rise in electricity consumption, combined with spiraling energy prices, was driving total operating costs upwards. Customers were demanding a greener service and government pressures in the form of legislation and taxes were intensifying. Immediate action was required.
For Bradey, it provided an opportunity to show how technology innovation could lead this change. It is also his passion – he is the youngest officer at the firm and the first CIO I’ve met who has a passion for the environment. However, as he told me, “I don’t hug trees or live in a mud hut.”
