Canberra, Australia: 2013
Good evening. I am Susan Fletcher and welcome to Going Green, the weekly show that tells you how easy it is to do your bit for the environment.
Last week was not a very good week for Sir Seaton, yes, that Sir Seaton Sedgwick. Previously praised for his leadership of the greenest company in Australia, Sedgwick Insurance plc, we read with great interest that Sir Seaton used a private helicopter to go to the Top Business Leaders Summit in Sydney. His spokeswoman said that flying from Canberra to Sydney to attend the summit was really the only option, although he recognized it was not the best one for the environment.
We thought that we should challenge this. So, earlier this week we went to the ‘My Best Friend’ pet show, which was organized at the same venue. What a great opportunity to investigate whether we could do better than Sir Seaton.
While at the pet show we also investigated whether the pet industry has made an attempt to offer greener products for pet owners, which is over half of the Australian population.
According to our calculations, Sir Seaton took about 2.5 hour to get from his head office in Canberra to the summit in Sydney, generating about 1,000kg of carbon dioxide.
