Different beats, same tune
London, UK: May 2014
Chief Constable Angus Patterson has the look of a man who has seen a few changes on his 30-year climb up the police career ladder: “Since I joined the force, the link between police and business has strengthened in many ways. For example, many manufacturers tag electronic devices to help them to manage their supply chain; those same tags help us to identify stolen goods and to return them to their rightful owner. The security devices that are now fitted to many mobile and domestic electronic entertainment devices are another example. These devices ‘know’ where they are located and what other devices are near them.
“If removed by a thief, the devices become inoperable and valueless. Also, the biometric chip has made credit cards less prone to forgery and fraud. All in all, a combination of better surveillance, a better equipped police force and better links with industry means that the number of traditional crimes like theft, mugging and burglary is falling.”
“Officers have also been relieved of large amounts of admin,” says Chief Constable Patterson. “What is left can often be done remotely on handheld computers or by using the onboard computer in a police car. Officers don’t need to come back to the station as often.”
The station where Constable Deborah Moore works is very different from the ones where Chief Constable Angus Patterson spent most of his career. She works in an electronic world where crime is increasing and criminals can remain unseen. A world where computers are hacked and passwords, knowledge and information are stolen.
