Reports are being received that large sections of Germany’s highways are in chaos. Early reports suggest multiple traffic jams have brought many roads to a standstill, stranding drivers and passengers. The cause of the chaos seems to be a failure in the Co-operative Vehicle Highway System (CVHS).
11:30 News update:
The BMVBW (the Federal Ministry for Traffic, Building and Housing) has confirmed systems failures on many of the major trunk routes in Nordrhine-Westfalia. Several minor accidents have been reported and up to 10,000 vehicles are said to be stranded. There are no reports of major accidents or serious injuries.
13:00 Latest news:
Police have just announced that a malicious virus could have been the cause of today’s CVHS system failure. Although the failure has now been rectified, it brought significant portions of major trunk routes to a standstill. Driver information, route management and auto-speed assistance were disabled for three hours. Several minor accidents were reported to the police. The incident has caused serious holdups on many major roads and police are advising people to avoid driving for the next 24 hours unless their journey is essential.
