Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) has revolutionised the fight against crime and terrorism. In simple terms, ANPR links up image recognition systems with intelligence databases to identify the movement of vehicles of interest.

The Home Office led an implementation programme to make ANPR available to the police service in England and Wales.
